IP, Subnetting, and CIDR

Back

If you do not yet know about the details of the IP protocol, IP addresses, and subnetting, this is the perfect first course. You'll learn how to interpret IP addresses and their subnetworks and, most important, the CIDR notation that has replaced the obsolescent subnet mask notation.

If you already know about TCP/IP networking but you still think in terms of Class A, Class B, and Class C networks, you're seriously out of date. This "classful" method of creating networks is obsolete. The Internet has moved on to the more efficient "classless" method of networking. You need to move on as well.

Notes:

  1. If you're trying to learn about IP and subnetting from a book that doesn't cover classless addressing and CIDR, you're learning from obsolete materials.
  2. This course covers IPv4 - the version that everyone uses. It does not cover IPv6 - the version that is still far from being widely deployed.

Prerequisites

You should have a basic understanding of computers and computer networking. You do not need to have detailed knowledge of IP, TCP, or other protocols.
