Using A LAN Analyzer

Back

Some networking problems are difficult to fix because they're not caused by broken hardware. Misconfigured software is a common cause of these problems but you frequently can't identify this from the symptoms. These problems are most quickly identified and fixed by capturing and analyzing the packets on your network.

This course teaches you about the various LAN analyzers available to you, how to use them, and how to interpret the results. The course focuses on the tcpdump and Ethereal LAN analyzers. Tcpdump is found on most Linux and Unix systems. Ethereal is multi-platform and can run on Windows, Linux, and Unix.

Prerequisites

You need to be familiar with TCP/IP and other Internet-related protocols. ALC's IP, Subnetting, and CIDR course or equivalent experience is a minimum. ALC's TCP/IP and Internet Protocols course equips you with a better foundation for getting the most out of this course.
