Samba is Open Source Software that provides file and print services to Windows and SMB/CIFS clients. Samba typically runs on a Linux or UNIX platform and generally provides a more secure environment for your data than a Windows server. Additionally, a Samba server benfits from other features Linux/UNIX servers provide at low or no cost, such as:

  • Automation, such as automated backups, virus scanning, etc.
  • Virus Scanning - No-cost, open source virus scanning software
  • VPN - No-cost Virtual Private Networking to other SMB servers or client networks

This course covers installation and configuration of Samba on Linux, but most of the same concepts and procedures apply to other platforms as well.

Prerequisites

You should have a basic understanding of computers and computer networking. You do not need to have detailed knowledge of Samba or Microsoft networking beforehand.
