Intro To User Mode Linux (UML)

Back

User Mode Linux is a way of running one or more Linux operating systems inside another Linux operating system. There are numerous applications for this technology - most are security-related. A daemon or program that you don't trust can be run inside a UML, thus insulating it from the rest of the system. A UML can contain a honeypot so you can study attacks against your system. UMLs are a good way to learn (or teach) system administration or software installation or configuration without doing so on a live production system and without having to use another computer.

In this class, you'll learn the following:

  • Applications for UMLs
  • Adding UMLs to your existing Linux computer
  • Configuring your UML
  • Master console, consoles, & console options
  • COW files
  • Networking
  • Mapping hostfs to the UML
  • Supporting a graphical console

You'll receive a workbook that contains lab exercises.

UML Trainer

You'll also receive the UML trainer. You boot your computer from the UML Trainer CD-ROM and your computer will run Linux with two UMLs. You can access all three Linux systems at once.

Prerequisites

You should have a basic understanding of Linux.
